Unique Ways to Celebrate Mom

Your mom is always there for you. She's comforted, cuddled and kissed away all your cares and worries. Mother's Day is fast approaching, so it's time to celebrate her! Forget the typical Hallmark card, this Mother’s Day break out of the box and celebrate in a unique fashion!

Celebrations of mothers and motherhood go back to the ancient Greeks and Romans. But here in the U.S., Mother’s Day was invented by Anna Jarvis. In the early-1900s Jarvis pushed to create a holiday just for moms after the death of her own mother. President Woodrow Wilson made it official in 1914. These days, the holiday has spread to many other countries around the world. Springtime is a time of rebirth and renewal, so it's the perfect time to celebrate motherhood. This year, Mother's Day takes place on May 14.


Get away from the typical flowers and chocolates as a gift for the mom in your life. There are some more imaginative ways to celebrate!

What life lessons has your mom taught you? Write a list of these witticisms in a letter, print it up and frame it! Take mom on a family picnic and present it to her, along with a heartfelt smile.

Get goofy and sentimental by recreating those awkward old childhood photos of you and your siblings. Fully stage these recreations, and bring those mortifying memories back to life. Your mom will have a laugh!

Instead of buying mom flowers, how about planting a few of your own? Check out a nursery to pick out seedlings, potted herbs, or bulbs for the garden, and take some time together to plant as a family. Gorgeous blooms will create beautiful scenery!

Or, pick a beautiful tree from your local garden center and together, plant the tree in a prominent spot in your yard. Have a picnic under the tree each Mother’s Day to remember and commemorate the love and appreciation you have for your mom.

Of course if you do want to go traditional, gifting mom with blossoms is a classic choice. There are tons of local florists that will deliver mom's favorite flowers to her door. They offer everything from the standard red roses and tulips to hydrangeas, accompanied by a cute balloon. It's sure to make mom's day!

Mastro’s Ocean Club (with locations in Thousand Oaks and Malibu) is the upscale spot for your Mother's Day brunch. Dine on a Maine lobster Benedict, traditional lox and bagels or a delicious egg white omelette. Bacon strips and artisan pastries complete the scrumptious meal. Celebrate Mom at Roy’s Restaurant in Woodland Hills. They are dishing out a spectacular three-course brunch menu for the whole family. This tasty meal includes Roy's Benedict - featuring filet mignon or crab cakes in a playful interpretation of the classic dish – among other delightful choices.
