Shrek The Musical
It's not easy being green – especially when you are an ogre! The Tony-Award winning musical based on the 2001 Dreamworks film Shrek is coming to the Fred Kavli Theatre at the Civic Arts Plaza stage from Oct. 19 - Oct. 28, 2018. With animated songs by Jeanine Tesori and comical lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire, fairy tales will be coming true.
Set in a mythical land, Shrek the Musical is the story of a big, green ogre who, after being mocked and feared his entire life by anyone and everyone, retreats to his safe place, an ugly green swamp. But suddenly, a gang of hapless fairy-tale characters invade his sanctuary, saying they’ve been evicted from their own homes by the short-statured Lord Farquaad. Shrek strikes a deal: I’ll get your homes back, if you will just leave! Farquaad then strikes his own deal: He’ll empty Shrek's swamp from its unwelcome guests, if Shrek rescues Princess Fiona and brings her back to become his bride. Shrek obliges, yet finds he likes the princess under his care. A lot. But why does she always run off when the sun sets?
This is the perfect show for the kids. In fact the performance is catering to young audience members with a special raffle in honor of the musical, with it's amazing array of characters, as well as the upcoming Halloween holiday. Kids that dress in costume – any costume – will get a Shrek Trick or Treat goody bag and the opportunity to win the drawing where one boy and one girl will get to come up on stage to dance with the cast for “I'm a Believer.” Shrek's story is such a positive one, says Patrick Cassidy, Artistic Director for 5-STAR Theatricals. “It's amazing. It has so much heart,” he says. “This ogre finds love, despite the fact that everybody's afraid of him. He opens his heart as does Princess Fiona.”
The story is an enriching one, and teaches us that appearances are not what is important. It's what is inside that counts. So take a chance!
The Cast for Shrek The Musical features Trent Mills as Shrek, Alison Woods as Fiona, Marc Baron Ginsburg as Farquaad, and Lawrence Cummings as Donkey
Trent Mills has the stature of Shrek down pat – he's 6'4”! (The green part might take some stage makeup though.) Alison Woods is a tremendous actress, and even better, she's a local, having grown up in the Conejo Valley. Morris Cummings has had an incredibly successful career, with roles such as Sebastian in the Little Mermaid. And Mark Ginsberg is a true pro for 5-STAR Theatricals, with appearances in many, many diverse roles.
