NYE Around the World

Here are some New Year’s Eve parties celebrated throughout the world!

Each year as midnight approaches on December 31st all eyes turn to the Big Apple – and the infamous Times Square ball drop. This New Year's celebration is a symbol for the world. There are an estimated one million people in Times Square, millions nationwide and over a billion watching throughout the world. The Times Square New Year's Eve celebration features star-studded musical performances, balloons, handouts, confetti, and a colorful pyrotechnic display.

What better place to toast the new year than the Caribbean? Party this year in the British Virgin Islands. The theme is “The Nauti Yacht Club” and you should dress in costume like a yachtie, pirate, sea creature, or castaway. This seafaring party draws yacht owners from around the world to the bay at Jost Van Dyke, and celebs make an appearance. But no worries – you don't need to be a VIP, because there’s an all-night concert on the beach.

London is the perfect holiday destination for celebrating New Year’s Eve. London lights the sky with its stupendous fireworks show. New Year's Eve cruises are one of the best places to be at midnight and offer an unparalleled view of the fireworks. Welcome in the New Year as you cruise along London’s most famous waters – the Thames! Take in panoramic views of the city’s most iconic landmarks with an onboard bar and live musical entertainment and dance the night away.

Scotland celebrates with an outdoor festival of Hogmanay beginning Dec. 30, when torch-carrying partiers walk from Parliament Square to Calton Hill for a stupendous fireworks display. On the 31st, street parties and music festivals make their mark in the day, and even more fireworks spark over Edinburgh castle. The night finishes with the world’s largest rendition of "Auld Lang Syne."

Rio De Janeiro is party central! And on New Year's Eve Rio blows everyone else away at Copacabana Beach. Revelers dress all in white – it's said to be good luck, and popping corks of champagne dot the sandy landscape. At midnight, people pitch flowers into the ocean as a tribute to the sea goddess Yemanja.

Toast New Year's Eve in the City of Light with champagne, vin chaud (hot wine) or cider. A special New Years Paris treat is papillottes, which are chocolates or other confections that pop like firecrackers when opened. The Champs-Elysées is the place to be if you want a real party. This famed avenue offers a wide variety of dining and dancing, and then on the stroke of midnight you can check out the sparkling, shimmering lights at the Eiffel Tower.

If you love to ski and gamble, South Lake Tahoe is the best spot to visit. From Dec. 29 - 31 the city hosts the annual SnowGlobe Music Festival. This year's headliners include electronic musicians Above and Beyond, Diplo, and Eric Prydz. It's a world-class party.

Valparaíso, Chile boasts one of the hugest fireworks displays in South America. And that’s just the start, because there's a three-day beach bonanza. Over a million people make their way to the sand, finishing with a stunning collection of pyrotechnics. And even that's not the finish line, because revelers party until sunrise.

In Niagara Falls, Ontario the real party is in Queen Victoria Park, where a great rock lineup plays a concert before not one, but two (!) fireworks displays.

Quito, Ecuador is an up-and-coming city with a super cool New Year’s tradition. Locals create scarecrow-like effigies called “viejos,” made to represent anyone who has wronged you in the past year. At midnight the figures are burned, dismissing the bad and bringing in the good!

Watching fireworks from the Space Needle in Seattle, Washington  is truly iconic. There is revelry at Seattle Center, or you can head to one of the many parks with views of the Needle, such as Gas Works, Alki Beach, or Kerry Park. Seattle also offers some of the best beer around, so forget champagne, add a brew to toast in the new year!

Happy 2019!
