Millennial Moms

Mothers day is around the corner and Millennials – people born between 1980 and the early 2000s – are taking over as parents. Roughly one in five moms is a Millennial, and they account for almost 90 percent of the 1.5 million new mothers within the last year. In other words, there are nine million of them raising kids!

Millennials are unique in they grew up with modern media. They are also more likely to use their smartphone for purchasing – and boy do they love to shop! Mothers control 85% of household purchases and have a U.S. spending power of $2.4 trillion. They are also constantly reading reviews, grabbing Groupon coupons, and asking for opinions of other moms on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. They also care about the planet and its people.

Millennial moms do enjoy the finer things in life – provided it's on their own terms. They are super into companies that support social causes and they want personalization and a working relationship with the brands that they buy from.

More and more moms in their 20s and early 30s know about the importance of choosing organic foods. The term “organic” refers to the way agricultural products are grown and processed. Organic crops must be grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, bioengineered genes (GMOs), petroleum-based fertilizers, and sewage sludge-based fertilizers. Organic livestock must have access to the outdoors and be given organic feed. This distinction is perfect for health-conscious moms.

One way to buy organic is through local farmer's markets. Here are a few:

Thousand Oaks: Thursdays 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the The Oaks Mall east parking lot. Produce, flowers, food and more!

Calabasas: Saturdays 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Old Town Calabasas on Calabasas Road west of El Canon Avenue (across from Sagebrush Cantina). Call (818) 591-8161.

Westlake Village: Sundays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 2797 Agoura Road (Village Glen). Call (818) 591-8161.

As well, grocery stores like Sprouts and Whole Foods are a great and convenient source for organic foods.

Meal kit-delivery subscription services are hitting a sweet spot in the Millennial-priority diagram of convenient, healthy, and DIY food by delivering pre-measured, sustainable ingredients ready for cooking. New service brands like Plated, Hello Fresh and Blue Apron deliver healthy meals while making life easier. Ingredients are carefully packaged in a refrigerated box so food stays fresh.

Millennial moms have busy lives. So it only makes sense that they need to get away from it all. Spas are the perfect escape.

The Spa at Four Seasons Hotel Westlake Village near Malibu offers a nurturing retreat. Take a break from reality each Wednesday with a special package. Designed with the busy mom in mind – although you needn’t be a mom to enjoy it! – the Wow-Me-Wednesday Package offers guests their choice of a 50-minute Custom Organic Facial, 50-minute Maternity Massage or 50-minute Tranquility Massage for $135.

Spa Ojai is the perfect place to get away from it all. This 31,000 square-foot day spa includes two pools, workout room, Mind and Body Studio, Spa Boutique and Artist Cottage and Apothecary. Enjoy a fresh-pressed juice, or quiet and casual lunch at Spa Café. Make a weekend of it! All guests of the Ojai Valley Inn have complimentary use of the spa facilities when they purchase a Spa or Nail Salon treatment.

Burke Williams is located at The Village in Westfield Topanga. Offering the ultimate in personalization, the Alchemists at the Custom Blend Bar will work with you to choose from over 10,000 aromatherapy and herbal recipes. The Garden Room allows you to enjoy mini-services in a relaxing environment. Want more spa? Enjoy the benefits of massage, facials, and spa treatments every month of the year with the Membership Program.

Millennials love customization and moms will prize anything that is unique to them, their tastes, preferences and priorities. Personalized jewelry is perfect. Uncommon Goods offers a slew of bling that she can make to her own taste including necklaces, bracelets and rings.

The Pink Locket Amazon Shop is jewelry created with “that” woman in mind, who knows what she wants, loves simplicity and complexity. Metals include brass, copper, sterling silver, gold-filled and titanium. All are handmade using various metalsmith techniques and carefully crafted.

Alex and Ani believes in giving back. They support non-profits and change lives – all while creating beautiful jewelry. For this Mother's Day, get her bangles like the You Are My Heart Set, or the Rose Art Infusion Set, earrings like the White Sea Sultry Circlet Earrings, or Endless Knot Post Earrings, or a necklace like the Love Trio Expandable Necklace.

Devices such as activity trackers and smart watches are all the rage. Wearable technology is growing and growing – and Millennial moms love it!

Even if your mom takes walks with a stroller, she can strap on a Fitbit. Logging steps works and keeps you motivated – even if those steps have baby in tow. Fitbit Versa is a smartwatch that lasts four days and features a 24/7 heart rate, phone-free music, apps and more. Get personalized on-screen workouts that play on your wrist, coach you through each move and adapt based on feedback.

Why not make her the high-tech envy of her pals with an Apple Watch? Two of the world’s most innovative brands have taken their long-running partnership even further. With built-in cellular, Apple Watch Nike+ lets you train with in-ear coaching, stream your favorite music, and receive notifications – even when you don’t have your phone. And it’s swim-proof, so you can take a post-run dip in the pool.

Of course the best way to celebrate Mother's Day is to take her out to a scrumptious meal. It's brunch time!

Carbon Beach Club at the Malibu Beach Inn will have a three-course menu. Yummy options include deviled eggs; bucatini carbonara; baked eggs; quinoa bowl; petits fours and a sorbet trio. You can also add a wine pairing.

Luke in Woodland Hills will have bottomless mimosas and brunch specials including coddled eggs and summer truffles; charred scallion biscuits and sausage gravy; and ice cream sundae sandwiches.

Saddle Peak Lodge in Calabasas will serve a three-course brunch that includes a smoked salmon bagel; brioche French toast; goat cheese quiche and prime rib with seasonal vegetables.

Enjoy your delicious brunch at Sagebrush Cantina! All you can drink champagne, fresh squeezed OJ, flavored vodka. Omelets, oysters, shrimp, and caviar! Waffles, pancakes, bacon, sausage, fruits, salads, eggs and a lot more!

Millennial buyers often settle on their next car purchase when spotting it on the road – before they ever even test drive it! So cars have to have an extra sense of pizzaz! Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, automatic braking assist – these are all plusses.

Staying within the sub-$20,000 price point, Chevrolet’s Cruze touts class-leading connectivity and upscale styling is perfect to attract Millennial moms. With a standard 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, in-car apps, and available Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the Cruze speaks in a language Millennials can understand.

When it comes to hot trends in the automotive world, subcompact crossovers are at the top of the “it” list. Among the entrants to the market, Mazda’s CX-3 races to the front of the class thanks to bold styling, superb ride quality, and swift handling.

The Volkswagen Golf has been a hit since it came out over 30 years ago. The German automaker has refined the hatchback into one of the most appealing vehicles. 18 to 35 year olds remain the Golf’s target audience.

Tesla is accelerating the world's transition to sustainable energy, offering the safest, quickest electric cars on the road and integrated energy solutions. Tesla’s all-electric powertrain delivers unparalleled performance in all weather conditions – with dual motor all-wheel drive, acceleration and the highest safety rating of any car ever tested.

However, the car industry has been holding its breath because of the growing number of Millennials who are not purchasing vehicles. Instead of spending their money on buying a car, they have chosen public transportation such as Uber. Uber provides drivers and cars in minutes, and brands that help these multitasking Millennial moms make more efficient use of their time are the ones they tend to gravitate toward. One tap and a car comes directly to you. Hop in – your driver knows exactly where to go. And when you get there, just step out. Payment is completely seamless.

Video streaming is growing by leaps and bounds. An increasing number of people are ditching pay TV and switching to streaming services such as Hulu, Netflix and Amazon. Various satellite TV operators have been launching their own streaming services and offering live TV through broadband.

The smart home is an increasingly diverse category of products that give your home a Jetson-like appeal! Here’s a few of the best.

Amazon Echo is the best smart digital assistant available. It’s an intelligent, WiFi-enabled, voice-operated speaker that uses Amazon’s Alexa voice service to play and control music. Even calls can be made and answered. It can automate your home, as it’s compatible with Belkin, WeMo, Philips Hue, Samsung SmartThings, Wink, Insteon, Nest, and ecobee. It can also control pretty much any app.

The Nest Cam is a WiFi-controlled camera that works with Amazon's Alexa, films in 1080p (HD) and is meant to ward off and identify potential home intruders. It features night vision, two-way audio and digital zoom.

Nest also offers a Smart Smoke Alarm and Carbon Monoxide Detector: Nest Protect. Protect will vocally tell you exactly where a smoke or CO leak is detected. It also sends a message to your phone if the alarm sounds or the batteries are low.

Kwikset Kevo is the best smart lock. With Bluetooth functionality, all you need to do is touch the lock with your finger and it opens. You can also receive notifications of lock activity and manage access with the Kevo app.

If you want your home to grow, adapt, and integrate with the huge variety of automation products available to you, you’ll need a Smart Hub. The best is Samsung SmartThings. The Hub connects to your router and is compatible with ZigBee, Z-Wave, and Bluetooth products.
