Heathers the Musical
What's your damage? Heathers the Musical is so very – a dark and delicious story of Veronica Sawyer, a brainy, beautiful teenage misfit who hustles her way into the most powerful and ruthless clique at Westerberg High School. Based on the 1988 cult favorite movie starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, Heathers the Musical takes on the tough issues – bullying, suicide, eating disorders, homosexuality, and general teenage angst.
Veronica is just your normal teen until she is unexpectedly taken under the wings of the three beautiful and brutal Heathers. Her stock rises high, and she becomes one of the most popular girls in school. But that status comes at a price – including being cruel to her previous best friend Martha Dunnstock, who was played by the charming Madison Wechsler.
Then bad boy JD enters the scene, who is mysterious and rebellious and captures Veronica's heart utterly. But JD has demons, and he slowly leads Veronica down a dark path – which ends up in murder and a body count! So are they going to prom or hell?
Veronica unintentionally murders Heather Chandler – under the influence of JD. She's killed her best friend...and her worst enemy. But after all, here in Heathers the Musical, what's the difference?
Antonia Vivino plays Veronica exceptionally, with her desperate diary entries and her incredible acting chops and vocal abilities. Vivino received the NYA Award for "Artist of the Year" and was a finalist for "Best Actress" in the 5th Annual Jerry Herman Awards for her portrayal of "Wednesday Addams."
As JD, Mateo Gonzales created a vision of the boy we want to hate but have to love instead! He was an incredible actor with an equally incredible voice. And he's only a senior at Calabasas High School. We expect great things from him in the future!
Veronica and JD bond over slushies with "Freeze Your Brain." BQ corn nuts also play a role! After all, they are Heather Chandler's last words. (That's definitely better than Eskimo).
The three Heathers are the mean girls that every high school unfortunately has. Quinn Martin is queen bee Heather Chandler, red scrunchie and all. Zoe Brooke plays vapid cheerleader Heather McNamara and Heather Duke was performed by Erika Cruz. And don't forget to play croquet!
The three Heathers express themselves in "Candy Store," where they prance around and show how on top of the world they are. And how horrible they are to the rest of us plebians.
Football jocks – and jerks – who get their comeuppance are Jordan Schneider as Ram Sweeney and Khemuni Norodom as Kurt Kelly and clueless teacher Ms. Fleming is performed with aplomb by Codi Coates. Brent Ramirez loves his dead gay son as Ram's dad, and he is joined in song by Paul Panico as Kurt's dad.
Wickedly funny and with dazzling book, music and lyrics by Kevin Murphy (Reefer Madness, Desperate Housewives) and Laurence O'Keefe (Bat Boy, Legally Blonde), Heathers the Musical is a hilarious, heartfelt and homicidal pop-rock musical that was presented by Studio C Performing Arts. It is truly "Big Fun!"
